Kathleen Richardson of the Center for Computing and Social Responsibility at De Montfort University rejects the idea that love dolls can replace intimate human relationships. "The way people approach their relationships with people cannot be addressed with property," she said.

Richardson founded an organization, Campaign Against Sex Robots, and she argues that male sex dolls are the latest development in a disturbing, patriarchal culture that we should try to shake off.

To better understand what the experience might be like, I called Karley Sciortino, the host of Slutever on Viceland, who ordered a male lifelike sex doll (without the robot head) and had sex with her for her show.

Of course, since this is a service that goes beneath the surface, the scrubbing doesn't stop there. "Later in the cleaning process we go over it with Sex Doll to make sure we haven't missed anything and then we go over it with UVC light to eliminate any micro-bacteria," says Steve.

"After we wash the surface, we move on to the orifices. So we basically make [an] enema and insert it into the doll's orifices, and that's filled with antibacterial soap and also hydrogen peroxide."
